Right now, more than anything, people need to know they matter. Around the world, the rights of marginalised communities—those with different beliefs, cultures, or identities—are under threat. Many feel invisible, unheard, and unvalued.
Research by my colleague Sarah Wilson highlights the deep connection between volunteering and mattering - the sense that we are valued and have an impact.
Mattering isn’t just about being noticed; it’s about feeling important and knowing that our actions make a meaningful difference in the world.
It’s about belonging.
For those who feel excluded or unvalued, inclusive, transformative volunteer opportunities can be life-changing. Volunteering isn’t just about giving back - it’s about being part of something bigger, feeling seen, and knowing you have a role to play.
So, how can you ensure volunteers - especially those most excluded - know they matter? How can you create opportunities that don’t just invite participation but affirm worth?
Your choices shape belonging. Your leadership can ensure volunteering is more than a task - it can be a path to dignity, connection, and purpose.
What will you do today to make sure someone knows they matter?
